Built to last
When done properly, brickwork is extremely durable.
In fact, the ziggurats in Iran and Iraq, made of sun-dried bricks date from 3,000 BC: 400 years older than the earliest Egyptian pyramids!
LC Joinery, Roofing and Building Work does not offer a 5,000-year guarantee on our brickwork as yet, but we do make use of tried and tested traditional building craftmanship, brought right up to date with all the modern techniques and materials.
Versatile & eco-friendly
There’s a reason that so many dwellings are brick-built in Scotland: bricks have good water resistance, provide excellent noise and thermal insulation in their own right, they have a lifespan of over 200 years, they’re fireproof, eco-friendly and recyclable.
Depending on what kind of bricks are used, they can have very good structural strength, too.
Multitude of uses
Brick work is a sector with a wide variety of applications, from new house builds to garden walls.
We offer a wide range of brick work solutions using traditional stone, block work and facing bricks – all used by house builders.
We cover a large variety of brickwork services throughout Fife, Dundee, Perth and Edinburgh.
All work is carried out to exceptional standards, and is backed by our meaningful guarantee.
Built right
To get the best from any brick-built structure it is crucial to get the basics right first.
As with anything in construction, preparation accounts for more than half the building time but it means that work will last many times longer.
Foundations
Good foundations are crucial in any masonry wall.
They will always be wider than the wall they support but the dimensions and composition will be calculated by the bricklayer, depending on the height and thickness of the wall they support, as well as the materials used, which determine the weight of the structure.
Mortar
Getting the mortar right is essential for a successful, long-lasting bond. Mortar is the name given to the mixture of sand, cement and water used to hold bricks together.
The exact proportions of each ingredient are determined by the nature of the bricks used.
The flexibility and porosity should match: too rigid a mortar and the bricks will crack and crumble over time, too soft and it will have insufficient strength.
In repairing or restoring existing brickwork, an experienced bricklayer will match the mortar used to the original.
This ensures uniformity of flexibility and strength. Many older buildings used lime mortar, which is softer, more flexible and more porous than cement mortar.
Any structure built using lime mortar cannot be repointed with cement mortar, as the differences between the two types of joints in the same structure will lead to serious problems in the medium to long term.
(Note: concrete and cement are not the same. Concrete is mortar with an aggregate of small stones or gravel for structural strength.)
