Central Heating Installation, Repair & Servicing Fife and Edinburgh
LC Central Heating are experts in all aspects of central heating installation, repair and installation across Fife and Edinburgh.
The main component of any gas central heating system is the boiler, but there are other critical components necessary for the smooth functioning of your central heating.
We discuss them here, along with common faults and what to do in the event of a breakdown.
Radiators
Starting with the most obvious, no system can function if one or more radiators has developed a fault.
If a radiator is hot at the bottom but cold at the top, it probably just needs to be bled: air has entered the system and is filling the top of the radiator. Only the water circulating round the system is being heated and the air, which rises to the top inside the radiator, is not conducting heat.
Bleeding is a very simple procedure you can do yourself with a radiator key and a cloth. You can get a radiator key very cheaply in a DIY store.
How To Bleed a Radiator:
Turn off the heating. Holding the cloth over the valve to catch any liquid that comes out, open the radiator valve (a square brass nut) at the top of the radiator a quarter turn anti-clockwise. Keep it open as long as you hear hissing as air escapes, then close again when liquid comes out.
Repeat with other radiators in the house.
Turn on the heating and check the radiators. This will have probably fixed the problem but if not, contact us.
Power Flush the Sludge from Your System
If the problem is that your radiators are hot at the top but cold at the bottom, you probably have a build-up of sludge in your system.
This is a mixture of dirt and rust that builds up over time. You cannot fix this yourself: contact LC Central Heating to arrange a power flush of your central heating system.
Repressurise Your System
If your radiators are cold all over, don’t panic. It may be just that the system has lost pressure. Not as serious as it sounds, it can be repressurised by filling up the system with water via the filling loop. You can do this yourself if you have the manual to show how your filling loop system works, or contact us.
Other Faults
If the problem is not due to loss of pressure, you may have a faulty pump, a fault with the boiler itself or an electronic fault with the programmer or thermostat. You should not attempt repairs on a central heating system. It could be dangerous and you will invalidate any manufacturer’s warranty.
