Fascias – UPVC Roofline
Not just a pretty face
Fascias are the vertical boards that run under the eaves of a roof and hide the ends of the roof rafters.
Along with the soffits, fascias play a key role in presenting a finished appearance to the join between the exterior walls and the roof.
However, they perform more functions than just improve the aesthetic appeal of your property.
They keep out pests, such as insects, birds, squirrels, etc., and contribute to waterproofing by supporting the guttering, although in some traditional stone-built dwellings, the fascias are part of the stone structure and guttering is fixed directly to the stone.
Materials
PVC
PVC is nowadays by far the most popular choice for fascias, as the material is strong, lightweight, requires low maintenance, but has a long life.
It’s also available in a number of colour options, such as white, rosewood, oak, black and now, very popular anthracite.
We use a quality 18mm mammoth fascia board.
Timber
Fascias were traditionally made from timber, predominantly pine or other soft white wood. The advantage of this was because the material is relatively cheap and easy to work with.
However, exterior woodwork requires to be regularly painted and maintained or it will crack and rot from atmospheric moisture and rain. This means the initial cost and convenience benefits are lost over time.
Another advantage of wood as a material is that it is straightforward to carve a decorative edge into it, to match original features of an older property and replacement and original woodwork can be matched perfectly by repainting both.
Care
The best care for your fascia is to keep your gutters clean and free from any blockages or vegetation. This prevents the gutters from overflowing, which can rot wooden fascias and soak masonry or brick work, causing serious problems due to moisture ingress.
It is also important to have your roof checked regularly, including the roof edge. Improper tile or shingle overhang can allow water to get behind the fascia and cause damage.
