Lead Work – Roofing Services Fife
Lead is a commonly used product within the building services and has been since the times of the Romans, who used it to seal their aqueducts.
Norman churches had it widely installed at construction throughout the Middle Ages.
It is still used today, and few modern alternatives can match it for durability and effectiveness.
Qualities
It is a soft yet durable material – it is known to last for up to 500 years – and its low melting point allows us to easily shape it to suit various surfaces or shaped gullies, etc.
We offer a wide range of services using rolled lead sheet at Code 4 or Code 5 (Code refers to the thickness of the lead, with the thicker the lead the larger the piece that can be laid.)
There is an accepted set of standards that matches a Code for each purpose.
For example, Code 4 is suitable for flashings, soakers, pitched valley gutters, dormers and vertical cladding, while Code 5 should be employed for pitched and tapered valley gutters, dormers, flashings, vertical cladding and flat roofs.
Uses
We use it for lead repairs, lead flashings and DPC trays on chimneys, lead flashing over flat roofs, lead gulley over-flashing, under-flashing on roofs or complete lead roofs.
Properties
At first glance, lead may appear to be more expensive than other roofing materials of its type, but it is one of the most durable building materials.
It’s also extremely eco-friendly: most lead used is recycled and it can be recycled again once the dwelling it is on has come to the end of its life.
Lead is completely impervious to water and moisture and its resilience does not degrade over time. It is virtually inert to oxidation, meaning it cannot and will not rust.
It does, however, develop an attractive patina, aging from light to dark grey.
Lead is perfectly safe when installed on an exterior roof and cannot be absorbed through the skin so it is not any way hazardous to the touch.
It is known for its toxicity, but only in uses such as plumbing, paints and gasoline (lead is banned in the UK and across much of the world for these purposes).
Our craftsmen are highly trained to avoid self-contamination when working with the metal, as it can only present a hazard in roof construction when welded or heated.
As you can see from our past projects gallery, we have carried out applications from lead chimney flashing and simple lead flashing at abutments, up to the more complex lead work like the curved top dormers and lead mop-rolled flat roofs.
All work is carried out by our fully trained and highly experienced team, and you can expect excellent results when you choose us as your roofing contractor.
We will ensure the perfect finish to any lead work we carry out and give you peace of mind that our workmanship will last for many years.
