If your walls and ceilings are not looking their best, or if you’ve removed wallpaper to find your walls are crumbling or uneven, you probably need a plasterer.

What kinds of plastering are there?
Plastering covers numerous areas:
- Interior work – including skimming, Artex, floor, screeding, plasterboarding, restoration work, archways and full tiling services
- Fibrous plaster – all decorative mouldings including cornice, coving and ceiling roses
- Exterior work – including roughcast and rendering new builds, extensions and renovations matching existing roughcasting
- Repairs – including cracks / holes, water damage, ceiling removal and replacement, lath and plaster repairs, frost damage, exterior repairs and insurance work.
Plastering tips
Plastering creates a lot of dust and a lot of moisture.
A good professional plasterer will seek to minimise the mess by mixing the plaster outdoors, where possible – this keeps the dust down inside – and covering floors and furniture with dust sheets.
After the work is done the plaster needs to dry out, so the room(s) need good cross-ventilation.
Drying can take anywhere between 2-7 days, depending on the outside temperature and humidity: drying times are shorter in the summer.
Don’t be tempted to use a dehumidifier to dry the plaster though.
Unlike cement or concrete, plaster dries rather than cures.
If it dries too quickly, however, it could lead to cracking, which will ruin the finish, leading to cracking. This may mean you need to get a plasterer out again to fix the problem.
You may be able to use heaters to speed up the process, but take advice from the plasterer on the best course of action in your case.
Why should I use a professional plasterer?
A skilled professional will always make a very difficult job look deceptively easy.
This is very much the case with plastering. It is one of those jobs that demands experience and training if you want the end result to look good and to last.
Otherwise, you risk losing a lot of time and spending a lot of money twice over: once when you do it yourself and then when you call in a plaster to do it again!
An experienced and qualified plasterer will almost certainly complete the job in half the time or less than it would take someone inexperienced.
