What are dormer windows? A dormer window is a type of window that protrudes from the roof of a building. They are often used to add extra light and ventilation to a room, and they can come in many different styles. If you are considering installing a dormer window in your home, here is what you need to know.
What’s a dormer window?
A dormer is a wooden or brick structure that’s built into the roof for extra space and head hight. Dormers are a great solution when you loft has limited height, or if you want to make it more usable without adding another storey or extension. Dormer bungalows are a great example if you want to create an additional floor in a one storey house without building upwards.
Dormer windows jut out of the roof shape and the bigger they get, they uglier they can look. It’s best to consult with an architect for expert advice.
Dormer window vs roof windows
Unlike a dormer window, a roof window lays flat against the roof. The window is the same width as the space between the rafters, making installation quick and easy. No additional walls need to be built and you can get away with using minimal building materials, reducing the construction cost.
Because a roof window is angled, more light can enter the room, making it lighter when compared to a vertical window that’s the same size. Roof windows usually don’t require planning permission, although we always recommend checking with your local planning authority.
Dormer window styles
The style of your potential dormer window will depend on the shape of your roof and the size of your loft space. Gable windows are the most common style of dormer. They look similar to a doghouse and are often called that. In addition, there a a few other styles to consider.
- Flat roof dormer
- Hip or hipped dormer
- Shed dormer
- L-shaped dormer
- Eyebrow dormer
Dormer VELUX
A dormer VELUX is an innovative alternative to a traditional dormer window. A VELUX Dormer lifts the window out of the roof, increasing useable space and allowing for much more natural daylight. A traditional dormer consists of a window and roof combination, a VELUX Dormer uses windows in place of the roof. The VELUX Dormer comes as a complete insulated solution, and you only need to complete the interior finish.
